Differences: I've been asked to clarify the differences between some of these similar dances.

Scottish: Highland dancing is essentially for individuals, competitive, in costume and yes, uses swords. Scottish Country is for couples and is a more formal version of "Barn Dancing".

Salsa: There are several variations, Cuban and Los Angeles styles being most common. LA tends to be danced in a straight line where Cuban introduces more rotation of the couple. They are largely interchangeable and if each of a couple have different styles, there should be no problem provided the leader (usually the man) gives a firm and clear lead.

Ceroc & Modern Jive: These are very similar and to a large extent interchangeable as with different styles of Salsa. The more advanced dancers tend to concentrate on more complex moves in Ceroc whereas Modern Jive emphasis is on style, interpreting the music and connection with your partner. Consequently Modern Jive tends to have a broader range of music and the dancing is less complex but more expressive. Blues Style uses slower music including Blues, Latin, Tango, Swing and others and concentrates on interpreting the music.

Jive: Modern Jive and Ballroom Jive have some similarities but are quite different. Ballroom Jive is much more formal and stylised. Modern Jive is more relaxed, is danced closer together and has variations such as dancing to Blues music.

And finally:

for all this you need the right clothes and shoes for which you can go to Kelly Marie's at Unit 2 Fishers Yard (next door to Sugar Daddy's), Market Square, phone 477212 or click here for her website.

This page is sponsored by Polaris Instruments Ltd for no particular reason except that we like dancing.... If you know of things we missed, and we are sure there must be some, please send us an email with the details, but for things within 5 miles of St Neots only please. This update 5th June 2010.
